Memberships, Appointments, and Awards

Luke Dollar, doctoral student in ecology, was awarded the Franks Gender and Science Award from the Women’s Studies Department at Duke for 2003. Dollar’s faculty advisor is Doris Duke Professor of Conservation Ecology Stuart L. Pimm.

Conservation biology doctoral candidate David Johnston was recently honored for the “best student presentation” at the 17th European Cetacean Society Meeting held in March at Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Gran Canaria Island. Johnston’s faculty advisor is Andrew J. Read, Rachel Carson Assistant Professor of Marine Conservation Biology.

Orrin Pilkey, James B. Duke Professor Emeritus of Geology, has been awarded the 2003 Priestly Award from Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pa. The award is made in memory of Joseph Priestley, discoverer of oxygen, and is given once a year to honor an outstanding American scientist for discoveries which contribute to the welfare of mankind.

Curtis J. Richardson, professor of resource ecology and chair of the division of environmental science and policy, was named a Fellow of the Society of Wetland Scientists (SWS) in a ceremony at the group’s annual meeting in June, in New Orleans, La. SWS Fellows have made outstanding contributions in an area of specialization whether in research, teaching, management, service or administration and whether in public, commercial or private service activities. Fellow is the highest recognition of membership bestowed by the society.

Kathryn A. Saterson, research scientist and executive director, Duke Center for Environmental Solutions, was elected secretary of the Board of Governors for the Society for Conservation Biology (SCB) for a three-year term (2002-05).
