Pippen Developing Butterflies of Duke Forest Brochure and Web Site

The Duke Forest Office soon will have available a detailed brochure featuring an annotated list of butterfly species found in the Forest. The brochure will include notes on habitat abundance, and species-specific bar graphs to illustrate the “flight times” when each adult species of butterfly would be expected to be found on the “wing.”

Jeffrey S. Pippen,Nicholas School research associate, working with the Office of the Duke Forest, received a $2,900 grant from the Mary Duke Biddle Foundation and a $5,000 award from the Duke University Office of the Provost to develop the brochure. In addition, his project will include a Butterflies of The Duke Forest Web site.

Judson Edeburn, Duke Forest resource manager, says that the information on species and locations will add a valuable component to the data available on the Forest including vascular flora, fish and fungi. Pippen’s study also will help assess how management activities might affect Forest biodiversity. Such data helps support certification of the sustainability of the Duke Forest by both the Forest Stewardship Council (Smartwood) and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative.
