Special Awards Recognize 2004 Grads

Virlis L. Fischer Award—Goes to the graduating professional degree student with the highest academic achievement. Given by Bernice Fischer in memory of her husband.

Post-Graduation Destination: Work in the Corporate Governance Department at Ford Motor Co. in Ann Arbor, Mich.;
Future Goals: “Immediate goal is to work for change in the auto industry by encouraging industry partnerships with government and NGOs. I hope that such partnerships will lead to solutions targeted at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and improving the auto industry’s environmental and social responsibility in general.”;

U.S. Forest Service Science Award—Given annually to students who have demonstrated outstanding achievements in mathematics and science.

: Broadus, Mont.; Major: B.S., Environmental Sciences; Activities at Duke: Work-study/independent study research, semesters at Marine Lab and Costa Rica; dedicated “Cameron Crazy”;
Awards/Honors: USDA Award, Graduation with Distinction, Dean’s List all four spring semesters;
Post-Graduation Destination: I would like to move back to mountains and snow (i.e. Rockies or Sierra) and continue building research experience. I’m also investigating Peace Corps or similar work in Africa or Central/South America.”;
Future Goals: “I’m aiming for a Ph.D. in a conservation biology/ecology field, but I can’t go to grad school until I narrow that down significantly! I will put that Ph.D. to work in an academic setting, preferably near the Rockies.”

Future Goals: “I will use the next two years in the MEM program to refine my goals for the future, but at this point I am interested in coastal geology and its role in informing coastal environmental policy.”
