R/V Melville

This afternoon we reached the first waypoint. Our position is approximately 2 degrees North, 101 degrees West. The main task of the day was to prepare the first dredge for sampling, which will begin in a few days time. The science crew got to operate the crane (see photo) and assemble the dredge (see photo). We have passed safely through “hurricane alley,” the region above approximately 5 degrees latitude where hurricanes most commonly form. The weather is expected to remain mainly smooth and cloudy in our study area near the equator. By Carrie Donnelly
