R/V Melville

Everyone’s gotten adjusted to the watch schedule now, and things are going well. This morning’s camera tow had some software problems and had to be brought up and redeployed, resulting in about an hour delay. We have been getting back some exciting pictures of the ocean floor, including the one listed in today’s dispatch that shows a possible extinct hydrothermal vent and a small crab on one of the rocks. The scientists on each shift are constantly working to keep dredge samples sorted (see photo), chipped, sawed, and processed. We are currently up to dredge number 10. We’ve had no giant squid spottings yet, but are ever on the lookout. By Jenny McGuire
