R/V Melville
Well it’s
Friday, and that means fish night in the mess hall. That’s about
the most exciting thing to happen today. However in the midst
of all of the photos of sediment that we took, we did notice this
really cool fish (see photo). If you have any idea what it is,
we’d really like to know. We don’t happen to have any marine biologists
onboard. Also, we have been getting many emails from family and
friends concerning the “baby giant squid” photo. We would like
to state for the record that it is, in fact, a normal squid. We
knew that. We were just joking about it being a giant squid since
we’d been hoping to catch one previously then happened to get
a photo of a squid on a camera tow. Friday’s feature figure is
Ron Comer, our resident marine technician (see photo). As a resident
technician, he is in charge of maintaining and helping to run
the geology sampling equipment on board. Whenever we have any
tie-ups with the dredge or camera tow, we immediately run to Ron
and he makes everything all better. He also acts as a liaison
between the scientists and crew. Ron has been working for Scripps
as a resident technician for 25 years. He’s had numerous adventures
aboard The R/V Melville and many other ships on which he has worked.
His favorite things about working on the ship are meeting the
ever changing group of people on the ships and traveling all over
the world. He has had many wonderful adventures, including visiting
gorgeous volcanic islands, sampling steam vents, and almost falling
off a cliff on Pitcairn Island. All in all, Ron is a really cool
guy, and we’re grateful to have him on board. By Jenny McGuire
