R/V Melville

On the third day we find ourselves still in transit, in amazingly blue water and hot weather. Our location is latitude 23 degrees N and longitude113 degrees W. Today the science crew learned about the tectonics of our study area from Debbie Smith, and later learned from Clare Williams about how magnetic anomalies will help us find rifts in the equatorial region (see photo). The crew caught the first fish of the trip (see photo): a 2 ft long mahi-mahi. By Carrie Donnelly and Jenny McGuire
