March 24: Leaving Manzanillo

9:00 am sharp –the R/V Atlantis pushes off the dock. Members of the science party line the deck to watch as the ship leaves Manzanillo. This will be our last view of land for the next 5 weeks … well, except for what we’ll see of the ocean floor through the eyes of Jason II, the ROV.  Other highlights of the day include a video and safety briefing in the ship’s library followed by Fire & Boat drills in the Main Lab. Safety is a top priority on the ship and drills are practiced once a week.  Here is a picture of Anne Zaino practicing putting on her survival suit. Smile!
