GIS Field Skills

Yes!!! GIS AND field work!

GIS Field Skills is the capstone course of the Certificate in Geospatial Analysis -- a two day combination lab / field work crash course in common tasks performed with a GPS unit. First we learned how to navigate to locations already defined in a database (created in the lab) and next we created new points in the field for specific objects / locations. The GPS work simulated "ground-truthing" or verifying image attributes out in the field. In this case, we trekked around the Duke Gardens, verifying land cover types using both simple Garmin and more high-tech (and pricey) Trimble units, loaded with ESRI's ArcPad. The Trimble units also had loaded an educational game where you had to navigate yourself away from incoming monsters!!
