Thelma
has been with the Nicholas School over fifteen years
and has worked at Duke for almost 30 years. She and her husband, Mike, are
true blue Duke and Tampa Bay Buccaneer fans. Always there to
help students and answer questions, Thelma also
knows the importance of a quick energy boost
and has a ready supply of candy available at
her desk.
Thelma's favorite things in life include
her grandsons, Max and Spencer, her granddaughters,
Jennifer and Kayla; her two Pomeranians named Morgan and Dusty. Thelma's passion in life, is working with the Mabopane Foundation, a Raleigh, NC based nonprofit organization that provides basic needs of food, shelter, and clothing to orphaned/abandoned/disadvantaged children in Mabopane, South Africa. A large percentage of her "non-Nicholas School" time and energy is devoted to building and overseeing an orphanage in Mabopane, South Africa. She spends 3 weeks each summer with her "200 South African" kids ranging in age from 2 to 21 years of age.
In 1997 Thelma received the
prestigious Presidential Award as the Outstanding
Staff Member at Duke University, and in 1999
the students voted her as the Outstanding Nicholas
School Staff Member of the Year.
