CEHI's Lead Risk Exposure Model Highlighted in The Opportunity Agenda -- August 19, 2009

A new report issued by The Opportunity Agenda highlights a series of papers which examine the effectiveness of using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) as a tool to address health inequalities and social justice issues. The use of GIS in numerous imaginative ways as a tool for advocacy and policy change is highlighted in eight reports. Case studies and best practices are presented social justice issues ranging from health equity to social justice journalism. CEHI's work in North Carolina on development of the Lead Risk Exposure Model is highlighted in a case report prepared by the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity. The Lead Exposure Risk Model uses spatial analysis to promote preventive approaches to childhood lead poisoning. The Kirwan case report entitled "Utilizing GIS to Support Advocacy and Social Justice: A Case Study of University-Led Initiatives" describes 11 projects from across the U.S. where university researchers are engaged in using GIS to define and describe environmental risks, health disparities, and social inequalities in local communities. The entire report: Using Maps to Promote Health Equity can be accessed through this link, http://opportunityagenda.org/mapping.
