Overview The Center for Hydrologic
Science at Duke University is an active group of 12 faculty engaged in a broad suite
of hydrologic research. The Center is designed to provide a cohesive program for
research and graduate-level education in hydrology. |
Research Specialties of the Faculty Include:
| Contaminant hydrology | Micrometeorology |
| Environmental geophysics | Sedimentary geochemistry |
| Forest hydrology | Soils and nutrient cycling |
| Geomorphology | Sediment transport |
| Hydrogeology | Waste treatment |
| Mathematical models of multi-phase transport | Watershed hydrology |
The broad range of faculty expertise in hydrology allows
graduate students to obtain well balanced training in the classroom. Certificate in Hydrology:
For students engaged in Ph.D. research the Center offers a Certificate in Hydrology
that is granted in addition to the Ph.D. degree in their host department. Students must
complete 8 courses, approximately 2 in each of the following areas: Mechanics,
Transport, Chemistry/Biology, Quantitative Methods. A list of approved courses is
maintained at: Courses.
Furthermore, students must present at least one public seminar at Duke University on their research.
The Center offers fellowships for graduate study in hydrology and organizes a lecture
series that attracts speakers of international stature. Monthly colloquia are organized
for student and faculty presentations from Duke as well as the nearby University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University in Raleigh.
