Student Qualifications -- Duke/Yale Student Profile
The Duke Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences
and Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies attract
an experienced and diverse student population to their professional
and graduate programs: total enrollment for the two graduate programs
is approximately 450 for 2007-2008 academic year.
Relevant Work Experience:
Duke: 58 percent of the class of
2007 participated in career-related work experiences as an integral
part of their professional training. Forty-four percent of the
Duke students had one to 2.5 years of professional experience
prior to graduate study, and an additional 14 percent had more
than three years experience.
Yale: 75 percent of Yale's 2006 graduates had
2-5 years of professional experience before beginning their
Master's degree program. Ten percent also have graduate or professional
degrees upon admission. All students participate in a summer
internship between their first and second year. Many students
have academic research experiences. Yale also has a one-year
degree program for mid-career professionals.: 75 percent of

Multiple Degrees:
Duke: Eight Duke students are enrolled
in joint degree programs with business, law, education or public
policy.
Yale has joint degree programs in architecture,
law (as well as joint degree programs with Pace Law School and
Vermont Law School), management, public health, international
relations, development economics, and divinity. There are 56
joint degree students.
Geographic Diversity:
Duke: 27 percent of students are
from the Northeast United States; 16 percent from the Southeast
US; 19 percent from the Mid-Atlantic US; 16 percent come from
the Midwest; 13 percent are from the Western US; and 9 percent
of our students this year are from foreign countries.
Yale has 70 percent domestic students from 41
US states and 30 percent international students from 35 countries.
Undergraduate Study:
Duke: 34 percent of students majored
in natural sciences; 29 percent in environmental or earth science;
16 percent in social sciences; 3 percent in humanities; 1 percent
in physical sciences; and 4 percent in engineering. Of these
Duke students, 13 percent completed double majors as undergraduates.
Yale: 25 percent of Yale students majored
in environmental and earth sciences; 23 percent in natural sciences;
22 percent in social sciences and business; 18 percent in humanities;
7 percent in physical sciences and engineering; and 5 percent in
forestry science and management.
