Computing in the Field

Pat HalpinThe Nicholas School's Patrick N. "Pat" Halpin is shown here demonstrating a Compaq iPaQ handheld computer to students in his GIS (Geographic Information Systems) course. Microsoft Corp. donated 10 of the computers to Duke University, and Halpin, secured them by writing a proposal to Duke's Center for Instructional Technology for field GIS data collection and mapping with ArcPad software.

Halpin, assistant professor of the practice of landscape ecology, is using the handheld computers in three courses this fall: ENVIRON 351 Computer based map analysis with GIS; ENVIRON 354 GIS Analysis for Conservation management; and ENVIRON 357 Satellite remote sensing for environmental analysis.
