He also presented "Reversing the decline of sea turtles: Insights from life-history population models" at the annual meeting of the Ecological Society of America in Madison, Wis., in August.

Coleman A. Doggett, visiting instructor, presented the A.D. Hopkins Award address August 2001 at the annual meeting of the Work Conference, Jykell Island, Ga.

He also presented "Insects of Southern Forest Nurseries and Their Control" at a short course sponsored by the U.S. Forest Service, University of Georgia Continuing Education Center, Aug. 18-19.

David HintonDavid E. Hinton, Nicholas Professor of ecotoxicology, will be a visiting professor at Nagoya University, Nagoya, Japan, January - March, 2002. His work will involve creating a precise internal map of development in the see-through medaka. This albino medaka fish is being used as an in vivo model for detection of compounds that alter development and differentiation of the reproductive system in fishes.

Hinton presented "Chemical Carcinogenesis in fishes: History, Current Research and Animal Models" at the University of Plymouth, July 10-11.

Hinton spoke on "Comparative Hepatic Structure in Mammals and Fishes: Interpreting Hepatobiliary Toxic Alterations in Tubular versus Laminar Livers" at the Sixth International Congress of Vertebrate Morphology, Jena, Germany, July 21-26.

He was co-chairman for an international meeting on Use of Medaka (Oryzias latipes) in Endocrine Disruptor Research in Nagoya, Japan, June 6-8.

Seth Kullman, assistant research professor, presented "Functional Characterization of Medaka CYP3A38 and CYP3A440 by Expression in a Recombinant Baculovirus System" at the 11th meeting of Pollutant Response in Marine Organisms (PRIMO), Plymouth, England, July.

Michael K. Orbach, director of the Duke Marine Lab and professor of the practice of marine affairs and policy, testified before the Subcommittee on Oceans and Fisheries of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation about the reauthorization of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, in May.

In March, he was an opening speaker in the first "Saving Our Seas" forum, Monterey Bay Aquarium.

In July, Orbach chaired the Plenary Session, "Everyday People and the Coast" at the international Coastal Zone '01 meetings, Cleveland, Ohio.

Craig A. Stow, visiting assistant professor of water resources, presented "Nitrogen TMDL development for the Neuse River, North Carolina" for the American Water Resources Association, Snowbird, Utah, June. At the North Carolina Water Resources Research Conference, Raleigh, N.C., March, he presented "Nutrient reduction in the Neuse River watershed: A case for adaptive management."

Dharni Vasudevan, assistant professor of environmental chemistry, presented two coauthored papers:

"Organic Ligand Adsorption at the Mineral-Water Interface: Role of Tautomeric Equilibrium". Coauthors P.J. Dorley and X. Zhuang, 11th Annual Goldschmidt Conference, Hotsprings, Va., May 20-24.

"Sorption-Desorption of Polar and Ionogenic Compounds in Iron-Oxide Rich Soils" coauthors E.M. Cooper and O.L. Van Exem, ACS 75th Colloid and Surface Science Symposium, Carnegie Mellon, Pittsburgh, Penn., June 10-13.

Jonathan B. Wiener, associate professor of law and of environment, has participated in several conferences. At the "Climate Policy - Do We Need a New Approach?" conference in Venice, Italy, Sept. 6-8, Wiener was co-organizer, session moderator, and speaker.

Wiener made a presentation to the Group of Policy Advisers, Office of the President, European Commission (Brussels, June 7), "The Reality of Precaution: Comparing National Approaches to Risk and Regulation."

At the Kennedy School Policy Workshop on The Role of Science and Economics in Setting Environmental Standards (Washington D.C., May 31) he presented "Institutionalizing Science and Economics in the Regulatory Process."
