Environmental Economist Martin Smith Receives National
Dissertation Award
Martin
D. Smith, assistant professor of environmental
economics at the Nicholas School, has received the 2002 Outstanding
Ph.D Dissertation Award from the American Agricultural Economics
Association (AAEA) in recognition of his superior achievement
in agricultural economics.
Smith earned his doctoral degree from the University of California
at Davis in 2001. His dissertation was “Spatial Behavior,
Marine Reserves and the Northern California Red Sea Urchin
Fishery.”
The AAEA, a non-profit professional society for those interested
in agricultural economics, environmental and natural resource
economics, recognized Smith at its annual meeting in Long
Beach, Calif., earlier this year with a certificate and a
$1,000 award. The association is based in Ames, Iowa.
Smith’s research focuses on spatial issues in natural
resource use and management. He specializes in applied econometrics
and bioeconomic modeling. His research projects include evaluating
marine reserves as a commercial fishery management tool and
modeling the impacts of commercial fishing on endangered species
through predator-prey interactions.
