Board Creates $1 Million Scholarship Fund in Honor of Dean SchlesingerThe Nicholas School Board of Visitors has established a $1 million financial aid scholarship to honor departing Dean William H. Schlesinger. As of August, $500,000 in gifts and commitments had been secured, which will be matched with $500,000 from the Duke University Financial Aid Initiative challenge for a total of $1 million.
Early in his tenure as dean, Schlesinger made financial aid one of his highest fundraising priorities. Schlesinger stepped down as dean on June 1 to become president of the Institute of Ecosytem Studies in Millbrook, N.Y.
Marshall Field, board president, said that creating the scholarship fund emerged as the best way of honoring Schlesinger given his priority on financial aid and the unique opportunity afforded by the challenge funds. The scholarship endowment will provide a permanent source of funding for financial aid for the school’s Master of Environmental Management and Master of Forestry students.
When Dukenvironment went to press, more than $4.9 million (including matching funds) had been raised toward the school’s $5 million Financial Aid Initiative campaign goal, which is part of the Duke University campaign to raise $300 million in endowment funds for financial aid.
“The importance of this Fund goes beyond honoring Bill. If we want the Nicholas School to be the best there is, we must have enough scholarship money to compete for the best students,” says Field.
