Nicholas School Student Receives Walter B. Jones Award

David CannyDavid S. Canny, an MEM candidate, is one of the recipients of the Walter B. Jones Memorial and NOAA Excellence Awards for 2001, which honor the late North Carolina Congressman.

Canny, a winner of the Excellence in Coastal and Marine Graduate Study Award, will receive his MEM in resource ecology in May. In December, he completed a Dean John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship, a yearlong program sponsored by the National Sea Grant Program.

Canny's innovative work at Duke provides one of the first detailed looks at the network of critical marine habitats off the coast of North Carolina. As a Knauss fellow, Canny was assigned to NOAA's Special Projects Office. He applied his marine ecology knowledge, computer mapping and satellite imagery experience, and deep-sea diving proficiency mapping Marine Protected Areas in the Southeast and West coastal regions.
