Global changes of the chemical and isotopic compositions of water resources

The quality of water resources worldwide has been rapidly deteriorated due to direct human pollution and changes in the hydrological balance derived from massive water withdrawals. Since different water and contaminant sources have distinctive geochemical and isotopic fingerprints, we have been used a large range of geochemical and isotopic tracers (boron, strontium, sulfur, oxygen, hydrogen, carbon) for investigating groundwater recharge, pathways, residence time, and contamination. Currently we are investigating groundwater resources in Morocco, Jordan, Israel, and New Zealand. The multiple isotopic approach enabled us to delineate the effect of different salinity sources and predict future sustainability of current and future water management practices.
