This (3 credit hour) advanced lecture/laboratory course is intended for those using spatial analysis in a masters, PhD, or other research project. It is taught as a series of modules designed to provide hands-on experience in the following topics:

  • Advanced model building using ArcGIS' geoprocessing modeler
  • Database management and structured query language (SQL)
  • The network data model and network analysis in ArcGIS
  • Writing geoprocessing scripts using Python
  • Open source alternatives to ArcGIS and inter-application scripting/programming
  • Enterprise and web-based GIS technologies
  • Geospatial analyses using multi-dimensional datasets
In addition to completing a problem set covering each of the above topics, each student creates his/her own self-contained geoprocessing tool designed to accomplish a discrete geospatial analysis, preferably useful to external research objectives.
