I came to Duke University to do a Masters Degree in 1989 with Dr. Norm Christensen. I examined successional patterns in the Duke Forest using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). I continued work with SAR as a Research Associate for a few years, spending summers in Alaska. With the development of the Geospatial Analysis Program at the Nicholas School, I became an instructor under the director, Dr. Pat Halpin. We have been teaching a variety of GIS and Remote Sensing classes for over 10 years now.

Pete and EllenI met my wife, Ellen Cooper when she arrived in Durham to work as a Research Associate in the Nicholas School. Ellen is currently in a Phd program here at the Nicholas School working on an EPA superfund grant.

We enjoy being outdoors; hiking, camping, backpacking, botanizing and birdwatching. The photo to the right is from Jonas Pass in Jasper National Park, Alberta Canada, during a week long backpacking trip.
