360 Degree Tours of the Duke Marine Lab
Take a panoramic look around our campus at the coast
The Duke Marine Lab
Exploration of the oceans, Earth's remaining frontier, requires not only scientists, but legal, business and political leaders who understand coastal and marine processes and associated environmental concerns. Programs at the Marine Lab offer the interdisciplinary education that is excellent preparation for careers in academia, medicine and health, industry, policy, law, and environmental conservation.

Historic Beaufort and Carrot Island
The Duke Marine Lab is located in historic Beaufort, one of North Carolina's principal fishing and recreational areas. The Marine Laboratory is a year-round coastal teaching and research campus located on the central coast of North Carolina where full-time resident faculty instruct students in two full academic semesters and two summer terms. The area's natural environment provides the most diverse study site on the East Coast - one rich in temperate and tropical flora and fauna. Habitats include rivers, creeks, coastal forests, sand beaches, cypress swamps, salt marshes, peat bogs and mud flats. Warm Gulf Stream waters, some 40 miles offshore, flow across the wide continental shelf. The lab's proximity to these diverse natural environments offers a variety of independent research opportunities. A high level of public interest in this coastal area creates pressing environmental issues.
