Destination Tampa

by David Palange Sep 23, 2009

Six weeks ago, I packed up my belongings in Durham and headed South to the state of Florida. I wasn't about to let the thought of hurricanes, lightning, and alligators scare me away from a great job opportunity.

I joined the staff of Eco2Asset Solutions and have assumed the role of Environmental Project Manager.  I helped design my job description and so far I have been doing everything I signed up for.  I split my time between scientific analysis, marketing and communications, and educational development.    In the last month, my duties have varied: I have worked on writing proposals, designing marketing materials and graphics, overseeing social marketing (Twitter us at EcoAssets) visiting and managing clients, attending conferences, researching carbon offset methodologies and projects, developing educational presentations, and much more.  Starting in a few weeks, I will be putting on my scienctific hat as our company just won a contract with a local county to do a greenhouse gas inventory, carbon sequestration evaluation of parks and preserves, and mitigation strategy.

Another interesting element of the job is that I am learning a lot about the Lykes Brothers Inc., the parent company of Eco2Asset Solutions.  The Lykes family is the ninth largest landowner in the United States and very well known in the Southeast.  Over their long history, they have been large players in many industries including shipping, cattle, meat processing, citrus, timber, banking and insurance.  From my office, I can often hear nearby coworkers talking about agricultural projects down at the ranch.  I plan to make it down to the ranch at some point to get in touch with the company's roots.

I am enjoying life after graduate school and find myself applying what I learned back at the Nicholas School.  To name a few courses, I can say that I am benefiting from Environmental Law class, Sustainable Business Strategy and the Science Communication seminar.  My summer internship with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources has also been a big help.
