Indoor Rock Climbing at Duke

by mike — Feb 26, 2008

Put some crunch back in your granola at the West Campus gym...

ClimbingThe indoor rock climbing wall over at the Wilson Center is quickly becoming the hottest Nick School hangout outside HUG Commons. You can get access for a small fee of $25 and an hour of belaying training -- which they'll wave for you if you can prove your competence. The sign-up fee covers free rental of shoes, harness, and chalk bag. Luckily, the shoes are still pretty fresh and new...

The wall itself is a 35 footer with around 12 climbing chutes. The wall staff changes up the routes as much as possible -- usually every month of two -- so things stay exciting.

Hours are pretty limited at the moment, but plans are in the works to expand open climbing time. Check out the wall Mondays, Wednesdays (ideal for a study break) and Fridays 7-10ish with extended hours on the weekend.

I love climbing these

We have one of these at our local Y. It has 6 levels of difficulty, one being ridiculously simple six, climbing like a fly up a wall. My two middle school boys and I can only do up to level 4 so ar, but we go about twice a week. It is crazy exercise. I would never imagined, it makes your forearms feel like jelly... numb jelly at that. But it's great exercise.

Shoes Question

I climb the one at my Y too.
How decent are the shoes they rent to you for the purpose? That's definitely cool that the include the training for that price!

Thanks

Steve
