American business and civic leader Marshall Field V, the fifth
generation of the Chicago family famous for merchandising
and publishing, is the new chair of the Nicholas School Board
of Visitors, succeeding Simon B. Rich Jr. He begins his tenure
following the April board meeting.
Field, of Lake Forest, Ill., has a strong interest in conservation. He is chair of the World Wildlife Fund’s National Council and currently is serving on the organization’s board of directors. He has been chair of the board of trustees at The Field Museum in Chicago, an educational institution concerned with the diversity and relationships in nature and among cultures, and is a member of The Nature Conservancy and the Atlantic Salmon Federation.
William H. Schlesinger, dean of the Nicholas School, says: “Marshall Field brings to the Nicholas School his vast experience in environmental education and conservation biology, through his work with The Field Museum and World Wildlife Fund programs. He is also an avid outdoorsman who appreciates stewardship of natural ecosystems for the services and enjoyment they provide.”
Educated at Harvard, Field entered the family business, Field Enterprises Inc. in Chicago, and during his career served as publisher of the Chicago Sun-Times and the Chicago Daily News. He now serves as chairman of the Old Mountain Company Inc., which manages his private investments.
Field says, “My goal is to work with Bill and our board to ensure that this school is the undisputed best environment school in the world.” He is married to Jamee J. Field. Their children are Abigail Beckwith Field T’02, Jamee Field, Marshall Field VI and Stephanie Field.
In 1982, the Fields established the Jamee and Marshall Field Foundation, which focuses on environmental and conservation issues, the arts and culture, education and health care.
