Nicholas Institute Faculty Advisory Committee
Ken
Reckhow Professor of Water Resources Environmental
Sciences and Policy Division, Chair
Dr. Reckhow's research activities have concerned the development, evaluation,
and application of models and other assessment techniques for the management
of water quality. Recent work by Professor Reckhow's group has focused on the
assessment of nonpoint source pollution on surface water quality and the development
of "Total Maximum Daily Loads" (TMDLs). For example, a current project
involves the modeling and assessment of allowable nitrogen loads to the Neuse
River Estuary in North Carolina in order to achieve compliance with the chlorophyll
standard. Dr. Reckhow was recently chair of the National Academy of Sciences
Committee assessing the scientific basis of the EPA TMDL program. In addition
to his faculty position at Duke, Dr. Reckhow is director of The University of
North Carolina Water Resources Research Institute. He currently serves as President
of the National Institutes for Water Resources, Chair of the North Carolina Sedimentation
Control Commission, Chair of the NASULGC Water Board, and on the Boards of the
Universities Council on Water Resources and the American Water Resources Association.
