Project – Technical Working Group on Agriculture Greenhouse Gases

Summary

The Nicholas Institute invites applications for research associate position.

The Nicholas Institute recently received funding for a new project on agricultural greenhouse gas mitigation (T-AGG). The project will develop the scientific and analytical foundation needed for building a suite of methodologies for high-quality voluntary market, U.S. state, and federal compliance-grade greenhouse gas mitigation (offsets) from the agricultural sector in the U.S. and begin to build this foundation for international agriculture as well. .

We are looking to fill a half-time research associate position to begin as soon as we find a suitable candidate and run through the end of 2010 or early 2011. We will look for other opportunities and projects to move this toward a full-time position, if that is of interest to the associate and if we can find a good fit in terms of skills and background.

The Associate will work directly with the project team in the Durham office on the Duke University campus, particularly with the Senior Associate Director of Ecosystem Services at the Nicholas Institute and the Research Coordinator for the T-AGG project. Responsibilities will include policy research, synthesis and review of environmental science, economic analysis, writing sections of reports, coordinating events and workshops, developing presentation materials, writing and sending announcements and updating a website.

The Nicholas Institute develops substantive environmental policy solutions, or lays the groundwork for such solutions, in the following policy areas: climate and energy (federal, state, and international levels), oceans and coasts, ecosystem services and conservation, water resources (federal and international), and North Carolina. In addition to headquarters at Duke, the Institute maintains a permanent office in Washington, D.C.

Requirements

The position is intended for a candidate with a Masters degree in a relevant area or a Bachelors degree with sufficient experience in a relevant area. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.

Experience
Applicants should have the ability to evaluate and communicate environmental science and policy analysis with stakeholders and policymakers; and the ability to conduct detail-oriented technical research. Applicants should also have proven ability to work effectively and flexibly within interdisciplinary teams on complex projects, and be comfortable taking initiative, working independently when the opportunity arises. Familiarity with climate change policy and experience in ecological or agricultural science is desired. Applicants should have a positive attitude and sense of humor.
