A brief roundup of news and information about the Nicholas Institute
for Environmental Policy Solutions at Duke University
Three new policy-relevant reports are available from the Nicholas Institute. To read them, click on the links below or visit the Institute Web site.
1. Governing the Seas
Ocean governance in the U.S. today is fragmented and, in many
cases, ineffective. This report reviews design principles for
switching to regional ecosystem-based management of the ocean
that would reduce duplication of effort, maximize limited resources,
and facilitate assessment and management of cumulative impacts. http://www.nicholas.duke.edu/institute/oceanesm.pdf
2. Terrestrial Trade-Offs
Recent studies document unreported methane emissions, and water,
soil and nutrient stresses that could reduce the benefits from
terrestrial carbon sink practices such as afforestation and
reforestation. This report examines the policy implications
of these findings.

3. Slow Fuse: Journalistic Approaches to Climate Change
This report summarizes the challenges media outlets face in their
efforts to produce accurate, unbiased coverage of climate change.
It offers recommendations from a panel of senior-level editors,
producers and reporters who took part in the Aspen Institute
and Nicholas Institute’s Conference on Journalism and the Environment
last summer. http://www.nicholas.duke.edu/institute/journalism_env.pdf
