Dispatches From The Field

30 June, 2003 -- Po-Hon Liu (Boris)

We caught our first glimpse of a fossa this morning. And this early in the field season, that's a great sign! Each morning and afternoon we split into teams to hike two transects, each more than 10 km. We collect data on absolutely every creature we spot. Fossa usually elude us on these biodiversity census hikes, but not today! Ted and a group of Earthwatch volunteers were hiking in one of our research areas, came around a corner in the trail, and there was a fossa, less than 20 meters away. That fossa wasn't wearing a radiocollar, meaning that it is a new animal for the area. It sure made our morning!
