Po-Hon Liu (Boris)

Coming from my home country to the United States for my graduate study in 2002, I am currently a graduate student at Duke University majoring in conservation biology of the environment and earth sciences. My name is Po-Hon Liu (Boris). I was born in 1971 and grew up in Taiwan. My parents are managing the international trading business. It was first time when I was coming to the United State for my undergraduate program at the Ohio State University in 1994 and got my B.A. degree of business in 1998. After that, I went back to Taiwan and worked for Nikon, Corp. I was hired to deal with the photographic assignments for Nikon’s Advertising Unit, and mainly focused on wildlife photography. In addition, I was a free-lance photojournalist in my spare time. Found out business is not my interest, I decided to switch my direction to the other field, which I can devote my lifetime and work on it. Now, I am studying my master program of conservation biology at Duke University. My best interest is the conservation of carnivorous mammals in tropical countries. In the long run, I would like to work for NGO whose projects require more scientific research for wild animals in the field.

Research Topic 2003:
My research study will focus on field data collection of individual fossa’s physical features and significances, geographical habitat, and possible migratory range by using triangulating technique and remote sensing control. After acquiring all field observation data, the goals of my study will be to 1) document and quantify biological and geographic data of trapped individuals; 2) compare differences of biological features between different trap sites; 3) use statistic modeling to estimate fossa’s population density; and 4) propose an effective conservation program to maintain population levels above the endangered threshold.
