How to access Marine Lab file servers or change your password from off-island.

To connect to Marine Lab servers or change your password, you need to be in one of several network contexts:

  1. Duke's academic network (152.3.*.*)
  2. Duke wireless with Duke VPN using wireless connection option (152.3.249.*)
  3. Outside network with Duke VPN using broadband connection option (152.3.249.*)

Steps to map drive in Windows:

  1. Right-click on "My Computer" and choose "Map Network Drive...". The Map Network Drive dialog box should come up.
  2. Fill in the drive letter you want to use.
  3. Enter the path to the network folder you'd like to access, in the form:
    1. \\servername.ml.duke.edu\sharename
  4.  Click on the "Connect using a different user name" link, and the "Connect As..." dialog box should come up.
  5. Enter your Marine Lab account information to authenticate the connection. This is the username and password you use to logon to Marine Lab computers. Prepend your username with "ML\", like this: ML\username
  6. Click OK to confirm the "Connect As..." dialog, then Finish to close the "Map Network Drive" dialog.

Steps to mount drive in Mac OS X:

  1. In Finder, open the "Go" menu.
  2. Choose "Connect to Server"
  3. Enter the path to the network folder you'd like to access, in the form:
    1. cifs://servername.ml.duke.edu/sharename
  4. In the authentication dialog, make sure the domain is "ML.duke.edu".
  5. Enter your Marine Lab account username and password, and click OK.

Changing your password while away from the Marine Lab (Windows only):

  1. On a Windows machine, press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to get the security dialog.
  2. Click the Change Password button.
  3. In the change password dialog, put in your ML username.
  4. For "Log on to:", put in ml.duke.edu (it won't be in the drop-down for non-Marine Lab computers, so you'll have to type it in).
  5. Enter your current password for the old password, and your new password twice. The new password has to be at least eight characters.
