Due to the rising cost of fuel, a fuel surcharge will be assessed on all Susan Hudson trips. The surcharge will be assessed as follows.
Category 1: Full-Time Running (vessel underway over 50% of total trip time)
Fuel Surcharge Rate: $ 25 per hour for total trip time (dock to dock)
Category 2: Half-Hour Running (vessel underway 50% or less of total trip time)
Fuel Surcharge Rage:$25 per hour for one-half of total trip time (dock to dock)
Rates for the Crandall and Carolina Skiff have increased to $85 per hour to cover increased fuel costs.

Passenger Vessel (R/V SUSAN HUDSON AND R/V CRANDALL): United States Coast Guard (USCG)-inspected vessels. Can do any type of work, including research work and passenger transport. US Coast Guard-licensed crew required.

Research Vessel (CAROLINA SKIFF): USCG-designated Oceanographic Research Vessel. Can only conduct oceanographic research. Duke Marine Laboratory certified captain required(3)

Transport Vessel (CAROLINA SKIFF): USCG-designated Transport Vessel. Can only transport passengers to and from land-based destinations. US Coast Guard-licensed captain required.
- Hourly rates are the same Monday through Sunday (a four-hour minimum is required for weekends and holidays). Charges will begin from the time the boat is scheduled to depart the dock until its return. Trip time will include an additional half hour for engine warm up, shut down and clean up. Trips over 12 hours are quoted on an individual basis and may include such costs as crew per diem ($40/day/person) and any berthing costs away from home port.Trips cancelled within five business days of the reservation are subject to a $125 cancellation fee. No shows will be charged for the full time booked.
- A fuel surcharge may be required due to sudden and unexpected rises in fuel costs. Groups will be notified in advance if such a fee is required.
- For trips under 20 miles offshore and less than 12 hours, 40 passengers are allowed. For 20 miles and beyond, no more than 20 passengers are allowed, as limited by the US Coast Guard. Trawl and/or dredge trips are limited to 25 passengers.
- The CAROLINA SKIFF and CRANDALL may be operated as a research vessel by Duke faculty and graduate students provided they have completed the America’s Boating Course (see Bill Kirby-Smith) and the Marine Operations orientation and operational test (see Lanier Mitchum). The Marine Operations training must be scheduled at least one workday prior to day of use. Transport trips on both vessels require a licensed captain.
