Financial Assistance for Summer Terms I and II

    Enrollment deadlines:

GLOBAL FELLOWSHIPS IN MARINE CONSERVATION (Summer Term II)
Deadline: 15 February
For additional information regarding the Global Fellowships in Marine Conservation applicants are encouraged to contact ml_admissions@nicholas.duke.edu.

Fellowships for international students will fully cover travel expenses, room and board, and tuition for both BIO 109/ENV 209 Conservation Biology and Policy and one elective course subject to availability.

Eligibility

This fellowship is available to any international applicant who meets the following precondition: admission to BIO109/ENV209 Conservation Biology and Policy.  Admission to the course does not automatically imply award of a fellowship; separate reviews are conducted.  International students living outside the United States are not required to pay deposits.

Application Form

There is no separate fellowship application form.  Intent to apply for a fellowship should be made known on the reverse of the summer course enrollment form.

Required Credentials

In addition to the summer application for courses and current college or professional school transcript*, each Global Fellowship applicant is required to submit (1) a brief essay (one page or less) describing the applicant’s education, research, and work experience background (a Curriculum Vitae does not take the place of this essay); (2) a brief statement of purpose, i.e., describing the applicant's reason for taking the course, how the applicant will be able to apply the training in his/her home country, the applicant's future goals; and (3) a letter of recommendation from academic faculty or employer addressed to Dr. Larry Crowder. All credentials may be posted (135 Duke Marine Lab Rd, Beaufort NC 28516, USA) or faxed (252 504 7648) to the attention of the Admissions Office or scanned and sent in Word or pdf form as an email attachment to ml_admissions@nicholas.duke.edu. We do not offer guidelines about the information to be included in your reference letter. These letters typically include how the referee knows you, his/her opinions of your work together in the past, and thoughts about whether he/she feels you'd be well suited to this program.

* If at all possible, a copy of the transcript is preferred. A scan (sent in Word or pdf form as an email attachment to ml_admissions@nicholas.duke.edu) or fax (252 504 7648) to the attention of the Admissions Office of an unofficial version of the transcript is fine. If this is impossible, then please send a copy of your degree. An ordinary (non certified) translation of the transcript is fine.

Due Date

All global fellowship credentials must be received no later than 15 February by the admissions office of the Marine Laboratory. All fellowship applicants will be notified of their award status shortly after the deadline date.

Two BOOKHOUT RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIPS

Two scholarships are offered for students interested in course work and research related to the invertebrate zoology of marine animals. Support includes room and board at the Marine Laboratory and a full tuition scholarship to take one of three courses (1.5 course credits) in Summer Session I (Marine Invertebrate Zoology, Physiology of Marine Animals OR Biochemistry of Marine Animals). Following a three-week break between sessions, the Scholarship provides support for a five-week research internship during Summer Session II. During this second term the Scholarship provides funds covering room and board, a $1000 stipend for living expenses and funds for research supplies. The only requirement for the research project is that it involves some aspect of the biology of invertebrate animals. The scholarship recipients will be assigned to a faculty sponsor based upon their stated interests or the recipients may request a specific faculty advisor. The scholarship is restricted to rising junior or senior students from accredited colleges and universities OR students who will be matriculating graduate students in the fall 2008.

For additional information regarding the Bookhout Research Scholarship students are encouraged to contact Dr. Bill Kirby-Smith (wwks@duke.edu, phone 252-504-7577), coordinator of the program.

Applications must include the following:

  1. A one- to two-page statement of interest,

  2. a transcript of college grades and

  3. a letter of recommendation from a faculty member familiar with the applicant’s college work. Deadline for applications is March 15. Successful applicants will be notified by March 20. Thereafter a decision to accept or decline the offer is expected by April 1.

TUITION SCHOLARSHIPS (Summer Terms I & II)
Deadline: 1 April

For additional information, contact ml_admissions@nicholas.duke.edu; 252-504-7502

Duke Marine Lab Summer Tuition Scholarships are available to all Duke or nonDuke undergraduates, postbaccalaureates or graduates (including foreign) for the summer courses. The criteria used in review of scholarship applicants are academic excellence, scope of preparation, professional goals, and need. A student may receive only one summer tuition scholarship per summer. The precondition for review of a scholarship application is admission to a specific summer course.  International students living out of the United States are not required to send a deposit.  Admission to courses does not automatically imply award of a scholarship; separate reviews are conducted.  There is no separate scholarship application form. Intent to apply for a scholarship should be made known on the summer course application.  In addition to the summer application for courses and current college or professional school transcript, each scholarship applicant is required to submit a letter of recommendation from academic faculty and a brief statement of purpose, i.e., the reason for taking the particular course and demonstrate a need for the scholarship. All scholarship applicants will be notified of their award status shortly after the deadline date, 1 April.

RESIDENTIAL ADVISOR POSITION (Summer Terms I & II)
Deadline: 2 April
For additional information, contact Lauren.Stulgis@duke.edu; 252-504-7531

The Marine Lab is seeking a Residential Advisor (RA) for the 2007 Summer Terms. The RA will receive room and board as payment for his/her services. You must be enrolled in a course in the same term for which you are applying for the RA position. A student enrolled in both terms has the possibility of being RA for both terms.

The RA is expected to live on campus and be available at times when faculty are not present, i.e., primarily nights and weekends. The role of the RA is that of an advisor to the undergraduate students in matters of student life and emergencies. In addition, the RA will organize a Residential Council of students, and will serve on that Council.

To apply please submit (preferably by email) the following by Wednesday, April 2, to Lauren Stulgis (Lauren.Stulgis@duke.edu; 252/504-7531):

  • A statement summarizing your skills and qualifications for the position. Tell us why you think you’d be a good RA.

  • Two non-academic letters of recommendation from persons who have personal knowledge of you (professionals not your peers). Letters should address your interpersonal skills, ability to deal with crises, etc. Academic letters of recommendation submitted for the summer tuition scholarship (if this applies to you) will not be used for the RA position.

An announcement of the successful candidate will be made on Wednesday, April 9.
