R/V Cape Hatteras      |      Duke University Marine Lab

Cruise Preparation | Medical Capabilities

R/V CAPE HATTERAS does not carry a medical doctor, but all officers are trained in Advanced or Basic First Aid and CPR. The ship maintains a medical locker under the control of the Master, which contains emergency supplies and some commonly used medications. The Master has access to medical advice through Maritime Health Services, Inc. which has contracted with UNOLS to provide 24 hour physician support directly to the R/V CAPE HATTERAS using satellite communications. Maritime Health Services' primary focus is to provide prompt, professional medical consultation to those in the isolated marine environment. If a medical situation should arise, the patient will be diagnosed, treatment prescribed and if necessary evacuation planned. Note that in case of a medical emergency at sea, the Master through the advice of Maritime Health Services, Inc., has final responsibility and authority in courses of action for treatment, evacuation, etc.. A member of the scientific party with a known medical problem should bring an adequate supply of required medications and be sure to inform the Master and Chief Scientist of the situation.
