R/V Cape Hatteras - Cruise Preparations - Labs and Scientific Areas

Major laboratory spaces are in the main laboratory on the main deck, and the electronics lab adjoining it. (See the ship layout figures for details of all laboratory spaces.) Throughout the laboratory spaces, UniStrut tie-downs are used.

Utilization of available scientific spaces is at the discretion of the Chief Scientist. The scientific party is responsible for the proper storage and securing of scientific equipment.

Before leaving the ship, the Chief Scientist should confirm that all spaces used by the scientific party are clean and left in good shape for the on-coming scientific party. Normally, scientific gear, samples, etc. should be removed at the end of a cruise.

It must be remembered that when the ship reaches open water, rolling and pitching may occur suddenly, and things not lashed down or otherwise stored may be damaged or cause injury. When the ship is underway, notify the watch officer before moving heavy loads, especially with the crane, so he can maneuver to minimize ship motion.
