R/V Cape Hatteras - Cruise Preparations - Operating Spaces
The scientific party is encouraged to move about on the ship and become familiar with its capabilities and limitations, and the operating procedures and problems of the officers and crew. There are, however, some cautions to be observed. The navigation bridge and wheelhouse are the command and control station for the ship; regulations are posted governing who is permitted, by law, to be in these areas. During traffic situations such as when entering and leaving port and during times of reduced visibility, the bridge and bridge wings are very active areas and should not be visited. The flying bridge (open area on top of wheelhouse) and upper deck areas are good locations from which to observe the operations without being in the way. If you go to the wheelhouse at night, remember that it must be kept as dark as possible so as not to interfere with the night vision of personnel on watch. Please close the night curtain behind you.
Machinery spaces, the galley and the boatswain's locker are restricted areas. The engine room and auxiliary machinery spaces pose personal hazards both in the moving parts of machinery and the noise. If you wish to enter these areas, ask permission from the appropriate crew member. Keep clear of moving machinery, and under no circumstances tamper with valves, switches, controls, etc.
