Bio:
My research interests deal broadly with human-environment relationships; particularly the social, political and discursive relationships natural resource users have with each other and with regulatory bodies. In general terms, the questions that interest me include:

  • What discursive strategies are employed by resource users and regulators to shape their relationships to the resource and to each other?
  • How are natural resource-dependent communities articulated in broader economies, and how does this affect power distributions within these communities?
  • What are the mechanisms by which access to natural resources is negotiated?

I aim to investigate these questions by engaging with different fishing communities (commercial and recreational) here in coastal North Carolina. I would like to know how these different fishing groups are connected to the larger economy, how they negotiate access to both ocean and coastal resources, and what strategies they use to discuss resources and promote their social and political interests.

Hobbies:
I am a terrible cook but I love to grow things; you can usually find me attempting to help along a struggling tomato plant or pot of marigolds. I also love all activities in or on the ocean, especially sailing. When not at the coast I like to hike, travel, and indulge my true bookworm nature.
