DURHAM, N.C. – Julia A. Burrows of Beaufort, N.C., a PhD student in marine science and conservation at Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment, has been awarded a Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarship from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

As one of seven national recipients of a Foster Scholarship this year, Burrows will receive an annual stipend of $30,000, up to $12,000 annually as an education allowance, and is eligible for up to $10,000 to support a four- to six-week research collaboration at a NOAA facility. She will be eligible to continue the scholarship program for four years. Foster Scholarships are awarded the nation’s top graduate-level scholars in marine biology, coastal resource management and maritime archeology.

Burrows also has been awarded a $2,500 Charles H. Bussmann Graduate Scholarship from the Marine Technology Society (MTS). MTS is an international professional society comprising ocean engineers, technologists, policymakers, educators and students.  MTS scholarships are competitive awards, given to student members of the society with outstanding academic records.

Burrows is pursuing her PhD studies at the Duke University Marine Laboratory in Beaufort.  Her faculty supervisor is David W. Johnston, research scientist.  She earned a bachelor’s degree in zoology from the University of Florida in 2000, and a master’s degree in marine science from Moss Landing Marine Laboratories in 2009.
