This evening we had a great treat after a
long day of hiking. Some of the team was out in the savanna
doing a lemur survey on one of the fragments, so the rest
of us went to town and bought some cold beers and some fresh
sambos to take out to meet the team at the radio tower.
Sambos are little fried dough triangles stuffed with either
ground zebu or potato. We loaded them up and made the 4
kilometer hike out to the radio tower in the middle of the
savanna. It is a good 45-minute hike, and we were definitely
hustling towards the end because we thought we were going
to miss the sunset. We made it though, and the beers were
still cold and a great reward waiting at the end of the
sandy hike. It was a great way for the team to relax a little
bit and just enjoy the environment we’ve been lucky enough
to be a part of for these first two weeks.
