Heidi Howell, Earthwatch team two

When I was twelve, we moved to a huge cattle ranch on the California Coast- had it not been for living there I would have turned out extremely squeemish and fearful of the outdoors. After college I visited San Fransisco for a weekend and never left. I have raised four children in the city. I used to bribe them to go camping, hoping to pass on my love of the outdoors. I have worked on a seagull population at Mono Lake for four summers, banding seagull chicks. A number of teachers at the school where I work as the school secretary have spent summers with Earthwatch. I jumped at the opportunity to come to Madagascar when I heard about this project.
I haven't seen a fossa yet, and we may not, but knowing that we might is a thrill. On our first day, we've seen so much already- amazing birds, butterflies, a few snakes, an iguana, a gecko, and hidden, out of sight crocs.
