I am not a giant Vaza
by Jack Ashton
June 29, 2005

So, I’m 6’4” (1m95) and I’m tall. In Madagascar, I am a giant earning stares from the local populace. (I think they are afraid I’ll squash their children) So, I am a giant Vaza (crazy foreigner).

Besides my being a walking freak show, the local Malagasy people are great. A simple “salama” (hello) brings smiles all around, and while my Malagasy is only about three words, the Malagasy people have been very helpful. Myself and another American were able to get locally made yogurt with our simple Malagasy and French skills.

Children are fun to interact with. One of their most enjoyable experiences is to have their picture taken. A “vaza” with a digital camera will be swarmed by children who want their picture taken.

So as I get more interaction with local people, I want everyone to know, “Do not fear the giant vaza.”
