Planet Pride
by Erica Strand
July 9, 2005

Of all the incredible things about Madagascar, I’d never have guessed the stars would have such an effect on me.

Last night I woke from a larium dream in a panic. I knew sleep was impossible, so I unzipped my tent and probed the sand outside for my sandals. Pacing for a bit, deciding to pull myself out of the haze with a cigarette. Before I had a chance, I caught a glimpse of something, I thought, was too bright to be a star. Stunned, I followed it to thousands more. The galaxy was a belt of dust, the closer stars shining like planets. I could actually see where earth was in relation to everything else we know.
It was unbelievable. I think it was the first time that I felt (instead of “knew”) how insanely special earth is, let alone how special Madagascar is! How badly we’re damaged our oasis didn’t occur to me. No sadness, just overwhelming pride in being alive.
