Defying Nature's End

This is a project, funded by Conservation International, with which Professor Pimm is closely involved. From a CI press release:

Co-chaired by renowned biologist and Harvard professor Edward O. Wilson and Intel co-founder Gordon E. Moore, "Defying Nature's End" is a collaborative effort by a diverse group of prominent scientists, economists and business leaders. Called a "practical agenda" for conserving the 25 hotspots identified as the most biodiverse areas on Earth, it aims for nothing less than pulling humanity back from the brink of an extinction crisis many scientists agree could be worse than the episode that wiped out the dinosaurs.

At the time of writing, Conservation International was no longer maintaining the conference website that contained the details of the discussions that led to the Science Policy Forum of September 21st 2001.

To ensure that these documents are available, they appear here. Three follow.

  1. A letter to Peter Seligman of Conservation International reporting the progress to date prior to the board meeting of Fall 2000. There is no response to this letter, because Mr. Seligman did not provide one. [View as html.] [Download in Rich Text format.]

  2. An overview of the conference produced soon afterwards (31st August 2000). [Download in Rich Text format.]

  3. The full text of the nine agendas. [Download in Rich Text format.]
