Funding Your Education
Assistantships
A number of you received assistantships as a part of your merit-based financial aid awards to attend the school, and you have probably been wondering how you will be paid and for whom you will be working. We are compiling a listing of the various assistantship positions that will be available, and this listing will be provided at the beginning of orientation to those students who were awarded assistantships. You will need to review this information and determine which assistantships are of interest to you.
During orientation, information will be provided concerning interviews, getting set up on payroll, etc. Part of the process involves certification that you are eligible to work in the United States. Be sure to bring with you a picture ID, along with a Social Security card or birth certificate or a passport. Please also bring with you a voided check from your checking account so that we can set up direct deposit for your monthly pay check. The check needs to have your name and address printed on the check—a starter check is not acceptable.
International students who have been offered an assistantship must take their award letter to the Office of Visa Services when they check in and have a representative in the Visa Services office complete the I-9 work authorization form.
Loan Applications
By now, you should have submitted to the Enrollment Services office applications for any student loans that you hope to receive for the fall semester. Although loan applications can be processed at any time throughout the academic year, you should submit your application materials several weeks prior to the date that you anticipate needing the funds since processing of the applications by our office and the lender takes a significant period of time.

Student Account Information/Bursar’s Office
The Bursar's Office (http://www.bursar.duke.edu/) serves the student community by assisting students with their bursar accounts/tuition bills. Billing statements for graduate and professional students have gone paperless. Graduate and professional student bills will be available for review through the ACES web system (http://www.registrar.duke.edu/registrar/studentpages/studentlinks.html).
Typically, tuition bills are generated after students register for fall classes in August; therefore, your tuition bill may not reflect tuition and fees for the fall 2009 term at this time. Students may view a billing schedule at http://www.bursar.duke.edu/Billing/. If you will have financial aid in excess of your fall charges, the Bursar’s Office will send a refund check to your local address some time after classes have begun. If you already know your local address, you may sign up for direct deposit by going to: http://www.bursar.duke.edu/FormsPubs/DDR_Auth.pdf.
