Contact Information
Helene McAdams is the point person for concurrent students to consult at Terry Sanford’s Institute of Public Policy for MPP course registration and program questions. Cynthia Peters is the point person at the Nicholas School of the Environment for MEM/MF registration and program requirement questions. The Office
of Professional Studies' interaction with students is similar to that of the MPP DGS.
Master’s Projects
The MPP student, MP Advisor, and committee members play crucial roles in ensuring that the Master’s Project (MP) is a top-quality piece of work. Advisors and committee members serve as guides to MPP students in forming and refining a topic for the MP, writing and defending a prospectus, writing and editing drafts, and ultimately finishing a Master’s Project, the culminating piece of the MPP Program at the Institute. In order to ensure that the student, advisor, and committee members have the most productive working relationship possible, we have created the following guidelines and expectations.
Joint-appointed faculty has had difficulty serving as primary advisors for MPP Master's Projects. Preference is for MPPs to consult joint faculty for service on MP Committees, not as primary MP advisors.

Registration
Although Helene submits the list of concurrent-degree students to be put on LOA (Leave of Absence) to the Graduate School in May, the Graduate School does not process LOA requests until mid-August, which can cause registration difficulties, such as forcing MEMs to register for Continuation. Students need to be advised to register under the MEM career, not the Graduate career, if they are scheduled to be on LOA from the MPP program during a given semester. If a student does register for Continuation when he/she should not, contact Helene McAdams, who will resolve the issue with the Graduate School.
