Quantitative/Analytical Courses - Spring 2010

updated 10/23/09

Here's a selection of quantitative courses being offered at Duke, UNC and NCSU this spring. This list is not intended to be exhaustive; there are other courses that can be used for quantitative credit.  As always, be sure to check on prerequisites and level of presentation before committing yourself, and be sure that the course you have selected satisfies requirements for your program.  Different programs sometimes treat the same course differently.

Please refer to the web page on Statistics Sequences at Duke, UNC and NCSU to see how quantitative courses at the three universities fit (or don't fit) together.

I. Satisfy statistics prerequisite

Duke

STA 101 Data Analysis/Stat Infer
STA 103 Probability/Stat Infer

UNC

BIOS 600 Principles of Statistical Inference

STOR 151 Basis Statistics
STOR 155 Intro Stat

NCSU

ST 507 Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences I
ST 511 Exp Statistics for Biological Sciences I

II. No stat. prerequisite (but may have other prerequisites, including calc.)

Duke

BA 513 Choice Theory (check prerequisites)

DECISION 312 Decision Models (note Excel prereq)

EOS 220 Fluid Dynamics (check prerequisites)

POL SCI 243S Pol Appl Game Theory (Calc & Prob pre-req)

UNC

ENVR 461 Environmental Modeling
ENVR 765 Model-Based Exposure Map. & Risk Assessment

NCSU

FOR 534 Forest Operations and Analysis

III. Require intro. statistics (prerequisite-level) and sometimes other prerequisites:

Duke

BIOLOGY/ENVIRON 303 Principles of Environmental Modeling

ENVIRON 271 Econ Analysis of Res & Env Policies (ENV 270 pre-req)
ENVIRON 280 Social Science Surveys

PUBPOL 313 Quantitative Evaluation Methods (overlaps ENVIRON 210/255)

GEOG 595 Ecological Modeling

NCSU

ST 505 Applied Nonparametric Statistics
ST 508 Statistics for Behavioral Sci II
ST 512 Experimental Statistics for Biological Sciences II (similar to ENVIRON 210 and 255, regression analysis, but more emphasis on experimental design than on regression)

IV. Require introductory statistics and some additional regression (ENVIRON 210 or ST 512 at NCSU):

Duke

BA 564 Exp Design & Analysis Seminar

BIOLOGY 268L/ENVIRON 231L Models for Env. Data

ECON 239D Introduction to Econometrics
(also requires 2 semesters of calculus, microeconomics; somewhat similar to ENVIRON255 (regression))

ENVIRON 255 Applied Regression Analysis
ENVIRON 350 Program Eval of Env Policies
ENVIRON 358 Multivariate Analysis in Comm & Landscape Ecol

POLSCI 233 Intermediate Statistical Methods

PUBPOL 311 Microeconomics: Policy Applications
