151L. Marine CSI - Conservation Forensics in the Marine Environment,  NS, SS, STS, R
Application of forensic genetic techniques to the study of marine crime. Reveal marketing frauds, mislabeling of seafood, and fishing violations using modern molecular forensic tools. Field trips to acquire samples for forensic analyses from local fishermen, retailers and restaurants; hands-on forensic genetics lab work and group assignments. Techniques include microsatellites and restriction fragment length polymorphism. Statistical approaches to forensics and species/population identity and assignment tests. (Given at Beaufort) Prerequisites: introductory biology.
