Environment General Courses (ENVIRON)

taught in Beaufort

298.09. Professional Writing and Self-editing. This course teaches students how to become more effective writers and editors. Focus on skills of clear thinking and ability to self-edit by reading excellent factual writing in order to identify specific aspects of it that can be mastered. Work from outline development to first draft and on to final draft, editing and polishing. Consider habits of successful writers (i.e., those who get published and paid as well). Emphasize writing for publication not only in professional journals but also in general media, and occasionally contemplate the strange behavior of editors and reviewers. Individualized instruction and analysis based on students’ writing. Students practice skills by writing and rewriting several short expository pieces for different audiences. (Lengthy papers are not necessary.) Students meet individually with the instructor(s) to discuss ways to improve their writing, and they will also have opportunities to present work orally in class. Instructors: Carris and Crowder. 3 units
