GRE (General Record Examination) All applicants must provide an official Graduate Record Exam score, which includes the following components: verbal, quantitative and analytical/writing assessment. Subject tests are not required. Scores should be reported to Duke University’s institution code number 5156; there is no department code. Applications will not be processed until official scores are received by ETS. For scores to be considered, the GRE must have been taken within five years of the date of application. The GRE is administered by the Educational Testing Service at locations throughout the world. Applicants are urged to take the exam by December 31. Scores on tests taken later than December may not reach the school until after the February 1 application deadline. Registration forms may be obtained by writing to GRE, Educational Testing Service, Princeton, NJ 08540, or online at http:/ /www.gre.org.
GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) MEM/MF applicants pursuing a concurrent MBA degree may submit an official GRE or GMAT score. The Nicholas School will accept an official GMAT score under the following conditions:
A. The applicant is applying simultaneously to the Nicholas School for the MEM or MF and to the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University or the Kenan-Flagler School of Business at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill for the MBA. The applicant must indicate on his/her application that he/she is a concurrent degree applicant so that the admissions committee will know to consider the GMAT score in the admission review process. Students applying solely to Kenan Flagler and not to Fuqua must have official GMAT scores to Duke University’s institution code Q13-N532. The GMAT score must be valid and official at the time of application.
B. The applicant is already enrolled in either the Fuqua School or Kenan-Flagler and decides to apply for the MEM or MF as a concurrent degree. In their Nicholas School application the student must specify which MBA program he/she is currently enrolled in. In the case of a current Kenan-Flagler student, the applicant must have official, valid GMAT scores sent to Duke University’s institution code Q13-N532. Regretfully the Nicholas School cannot accept LSAT scores in lieu of GRE scores for those applicants who are applying to the Nicholas School and the Duke Law School in order to pursue the MEM or MF concurrently with the JD. To get additional information or to register for the exam, go to: http://www.mba.com/mba/TaketheGMAT.
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) If the native language is not English, the applicant must submit an official score on the TOEFL to be considered for admission. Applicants that earn their undergraduate degree in the United States may waive the TOEFL application requirement. Official scores should be reported to Duke University’s institution code 5156; there is no department code. Applications will not be processed until official scores are received by ETS.
All arrangements for taking the TOEFL must be made directly with the Educational Testing Service, Box 6151, Princeton, NJ 08540-6151; telephone 609-771-7100. In cases in which an applicant’s TOEFL score is low, the applicant may be accepted on the provision that he/she completes an intensive English language program in the United States prior to enrollment. Proficiency exams in written and spoken English will be given to non-native speakers during orientation week. Students found to lack the proficiency in English needed to do well at Duke will be required to enroll in additional English language instruction. Students should be prepared to assume all costs for being tutored in English and may need to reduce their course or research program while being tutored. To schedule a test date, visit their website at www.ets.org/toefl/.
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) As an alternative to the TOEFL, applicants may submit an official IELTS score. Applicants should send a copy of their official score report to the Office of Enrollment Services. To find additional information about the IELTS and/or to register for the exam, go to: http://www.ielts.org/.
LSAT (Law School Admission Test) Applicants pursuing the MEM/MF with the JD (Juris Doctorate) must submit an official LSAT score to the Duke School of Law and an official GRE score to the Nicholas School. Applicants pursuing the JD/MA program may submit only an official LSAT score. To find additional information about either the LSAT or GRE and/or to register, go to: www.lsat.org/ or http:/ /www.gre.org.
