Program Mission
The Master of Environmental Management and Master
of Forestry programs advance the Nicholas School mission
by training environmental professionals who analyze
and interpret scientific information to solve environmental
problems and manage natural resources. Graduates of
these programs are expected to understand the scientific
bases of environmental problems as well as the social,
political, and economic factors that determine effective
policy solutions.
Educational Goals
To fulfill our mission, these programs provide:
- a knowledge base that has both the breadth needed
to respond to a changing landscape of environmental
problems and social needs, and the depth necessary
to exercise professional judgment within a problem
area;
- quantitative and qualitative analytical skills
for bringing natural and social science data to bear
on environmental problems;
- management skills to work effectively with other
professionals in cross-disciplinary settings in the
government, non-profit and business sectors;
- oral and written communications skills for bringing
environmental solutions to decision makers and the
public.
